Hazards Identification

  • Emergency Overview : Clear, red colored liquid. Corrosive to the eyes, skin, gastrointestinal tract and respiratory system.
  • Potential Acute Health Effects
    • Skin : Causes corrosive burns. Brief exposure may cause irritation and defalcating of the skin.
    • Eyes : Causes burns and may result in permanent injury to eyes including blindness.
    • Ingestion : May be harmful if swallowed including gastrointestinal irritation, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
  • Inhalation : Mists and vapors can irritate the throat and respiratory tract. High vapor concentrations may cause central nervous system effects. Symptoms may include headaches, dizziness and drowsiness.
  • Potential Chronic Health Effects : Ingestion of ethanol by pregnant women can cause reproductive toxicity to the fetus.

First Aid Measures

  • Eye Contact : Immediately flush eyes with running water for at least 15 minutes, while holding eyelids open. Remove contact lenses, if present, after the first 5 minutes, then continue rinsing eye. Seek medical attention.
  • Skin Contact : Remove and wash contaminated clothing before reuse. Rinse skin immediately with plenty of water.
  • Inhalation : If symptoms are present, move to fresh air. If person is not breathing call 911 or an ambulance, then give artificial respiration if possible
  • Ingestion : Do not Induce vomiting. Drink water in large amounts and call a physician immediately. Avoid alcohol. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person.
  • Note to physician : Probable mucous damage may contraindicate the use of gastric lavage.
